Thanks to Lauren Vogel Weiss for photos of NEXUS at PASIC 2012 in Austin. Check our Facebook page to see all of them (and please click that “Like” button while you are there, so that you receive updates to the page!) Ray Dillard, who conducted this revival of John Cage’s “The City Wears a Slouch Hat” says it is tremendously complicated, and he and all the NEXUS members are so pleased with how it all turned out, in performance. Now they are working towards the full presentation with live actors at Bard College for the John Cage Trust on November 17th, and the recording of it on November 18th in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY. The program is called “John Cage On & Off the Air”. (NEXUS will also be performing Cage’s “Credo in US”). An interesting twist to this collaboration with composer Mikel Rousel is that in future, the Trust will be able to show the film with the NEXUS soundtrack, OR present it live with NEXUS, while NEXUS will be able to perform the music alone anytime or with the Rousel film! This ties in nicely with NEXUS’s other film work: accompaniments to the silent films “Teddy at the Throttle” (Max Sennett) and Kinugasa’s “A Page of Madness”, and the soundtracks they have created for the Oscar-winning “The Man Who Skied Down Everest” and the Canadian National Film Board’s “Inside Time“.
