NEXUS is preparing for their return to Austin TX on November 1st for PASIC 2012. PASIC is billed as “the biggest percussion event in the world.” For the NEXUS performance Bill has been creating a new water gong and working on sound triggers for Cage’s The City Wears A Slouch Hat. You can read more about this piece (which NEXUS premieres in its entirety later in November at Bard College) by clicking here .
NEXUS has a rich association with both PASIC and with Austin. In 2011 NEXUS performed with the Austin Symphony, a performance that reviewer Luke Quinton called “a sonic feast- it reached through the audience and the entire hall.”
NEXUS members participated in a wide variety of activities at last year’s PASIC in Indianapolis, and they were in Austin at PASIC 2008 to premiere The Eternal Dance of Life a commissioned work by Juilliard’s Eric Ewazen for percussion and wind ensemble.
NEXUS was inducted into the PAS Hall of Fame at the 1999 PASIC in Columbus Ohio, and this year our good friend Gordon Stout will be inducted while in Austin. Gordon (who is considered “the Rubinstein of all aspects of the marimba” wrote for NEXUS the quirky Prelude – Winter Song composed for two marimbas, vibes, four drums and three cymbals/metal instruments. Ruth Komanoff Underwood (percussionist for Frank Zappa) commissioned Prelude – Winter Song for NEXUS.
At PASIC 2004 in Nashville NEXUS performed with Fritz Hauser, who will be working with NEXUS again this month on Oct 12th at University of Toronto in a FREE workshop.
PASIC is a not-to-be-missed percussion event. See you in Austin!
